tibits; A Buffet with a Difference

I recently checked out tibits, a vegetarian restaurant and bar, and I absolutely loved it. Tibits offer a wide variety of vegetarian buffet food, which makes it the perfect place to dine out if you’re not quite sure what you want to eat yet! It’s brilliant for splurging or scrimping on the pennies too – it can cost as little or as much as you want. With a twist on the more conventional buffet idea, the protocol here is to select what you want from the range of dishes, take your plate up to the counter to be placed on a scale and then pay for your meal depending on the weight. It’s a pretty novel system but I thought it was great!

tibits_a_buffet_with_a_difference_the_flexifoodie (4)The buffet is apparently changed daily, and each option is helpfully labeled so that you can distinguish between the vegetarian, vegan and gluten free food. If you don’t eat meat or dairy and you’ve ever tried to dine at a regular buffet, then you’ll understand just how much easier and enjoyable this makes your dining experience. I liked the fact that there is a great selection of organic wines and beers on offer, as well as the typical fresh juices and hot drinks.

tibits_a_buffet_with_a_difference_theflexifoodieRight now there are some amazing autumn specials on the menu, such as the Onde con Funghi al Tartufo (a mushroom pasta dish) and the Focaccia Mexicana pizza, both of which are delicious! I always think the dessert is the most important part of a meal though and the dessert menu here was a treat.  The selection of sweet dishes on the list is fantastic, and with the desserts being vegan I couldn’t be happier. Needless to say, I’ll be bringing all 4 of my kids along next time for the sticky toffee pudding! The staff at tibits are really child friendly as well, great for people like me who want both quality food and good service for their kids (a rare find).

I find the problem with a lot of restaurants in this part of town is that they’re overly busy with minimal seating – not the best for sitting down with friends or for having kids running underfoot. It’s the complete opposite at tibits – as you walk down from Regent Street, Heddon Street is a blissful sea of calm away from the mad flow of tourists.

Inside the restaurant, everything is decorated to give a cheerful atmosphere, and I’d recommend it as a good spot to meet friends for lunch or for a relaxed evening meal. Tibits also offers a take away option! I’ve often wanted to grab a vegan snack as I pass through central London and seeing that all their hot food is vegan, this is ideal – it’s practically open all day. I also saw that they have “vegan day” events that are every eleven days, details on their website www.tibits.co.uk, so I’m definitely coming back for that!

I have to say that tibits is definitely one of the few vegetarian or vegan restaurants to which you can take your carnivorous friends. The friend who came with me eats meat, and to have her actively enjoy the meatless dishes is pretty astounding. I’m sure many of you reading this know just how tedious pleasing carnivores can get!

Kaleberry Ice Cream

This is great way to get your kids to eat a dairy free, sugar free ice cream that even has a dark, green leafy vegetable in it – which they can’t see.  Genius, right? Yes, some times parents have to think of clever ways to get these greens into our kids diets.  Well, I can tell you – this one works!  Last night, all 4 kids happily consumed this ice-cream and my greedy guts 6-year old even had seconds!  It take NO time to whizz together.  So, next time your kids ask for ice cream, how about trying this one instead!  Warning:  This does not contain SUGAR!

Grab yourself these nutritious bits:
1 cup coconut milk; I prefer the brand ‘koko’ – yum.
Pop in 2 bananas in your freezer to make sure they’re nice and frozen before blending.
A super large handful of Kale (or even 2 super large handfuls if you prefer!)
2 pitted dates (love the medjool ones)
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 tsp. vanilla extract
pinch of himalayan sea salt
3-4 small ice cubes

Put all the ingredients in a high-speed blender, Vitamix is a great one – and watch how quickly (about 30 seconds) your ingredients morph into a delicious and incredibly nutrient-dense ice cream!  Top with some mint and you are good to go!

Blueberries are SHAMAZING!  They are always ranked as having one of the highest antioxidant capacities among all fruits, vegetables, spices and seasonings. Antioxidants are essential to optimizing health by helping to combat the free radicals that can damage cellular structures as well as DNA. So, I am in with a grin with the blueberries!  To change it up, go ahead and strawberries or raspberries or even blackberries or why not a big mixture of those amazing dark berries.

Sweet Potato Falafel Cabbage Wrap

I can’t get enough of the sun we’ve been having in London! I’m like, ‘Vitamin D feed me now!’ And with these light days, I need some light meals. My kids adore sweet potatoes, especially sweet potato fries – so this recipe gives that yummy sweet potato taste for my kids, with a great ‘Soured’ Cream topping and for the adults, an additional ‘kick up the backside’ spicy salsa. We used a Chinese Leaf Cabbage to wrap it all up, but use what you have in the fridge – even a big Romaine Lettuce leaf works too! And then top it all off with some Vitamin D, by sitting in the SUN while you happily munch away!

For the falafels you will need:

400g of sweet potatoes
A large handful of parsley
A large handful of coriander
1 and a 1/2 cups of walnuts
2 garlic cloves
1/2 an onion
3 tbsp. of coconut oil
1 tsp. of cumin
1 tbsp. of Buckwheat flour (really any flour of your choice works, I just wanted to use a gluten-free one)

sweet_potato_falafal_cabbage_wrap_grassrootsandgrains2Prick and bake the sweet potatoes on 200C for approximately 30 minutes or until soft. Allow them to cool and then scoop out the flesh. Next you must blend the parsley, coriander and walnuts in your food processor until well combined. Then, start to add the rest of the ingredients, including the sweet potatoes until the mixture becomes ‘paste’ like. Using your hands, create 20 – 24 small falafels and place them on a baking tray with parchment paper. Bake these for 20 minutes, turning them every 5 minutes or so until they are all a lovely brown colour.

250ml of coconut yogurt (Co Yo is a GREAT brand to try for this)
1 small cucumber, peeled, seeded and shredded
A large handful of mint, leaves only and finely chopped
1/2 a red chilli pepper, seeded and finely chopped
1 garlic clove, pressed
1 tsp. of cumin seeds

sweet_potato_falafal_cabbage_wrap_grassrootsandgrains4Place all the ingredients in a bowl, mix well and stick in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Simple as that!

250g of cherry tomatoes, diced
1/2 ared chilli, seeded and finely chopped
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
A small handful of coriander, chopped
1 tbsp. of olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

sweet_potato_falafal_cabbage_wrap_grassrootsandgrains3Place all the ingredients in a bowl, mix well and stick in the fridge for 30 minutes.

To assemble:

sweet_potato_falafal_cabbage_wrap_grassrootsandgrains7Take the cabbage or lettuce of your choice (must have large leaves) – I used Chinese Leaf cabbage. First you should rinse it then dry it and separate the leaves. Top the cabbage leaf with a few falafels and cover with the Cream and the Salsa. Wrap it all up and take a BIG bite. YUM!
