Keeping a Cold at Bay

Catching a cold doesn’t really sound like a serious health problem, but it can drag on and quickly drain your energy and motivation. Depending on the health of your immune system, a cold can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The rate at which your body recovers, and how much you struggle to function as normal while you are ill, will be largely dependent on how you treat your body in general.

Watch What You Eat

What you put into your body will have an impact on your health, both short-term and long-term. Regularly consuming alcohol and refined sugar will soon become detrimental to your immune system. Both alcohol and sugar can limit how effective the white cells are at combatting germs in the body.

As well as limiting your intake of alcohol and sugar, you should also ensure that you are consuming adequate amounts of high nutrient foods, such as fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, as these will support the function of your immune system.

The health of your gut is an extremely important thing to consider and can mean the difference between keeping a cold at bay and being wiped out for a week! During the winter months, when we can all use the extra help to stay healthy, it is a good idea to include a probiotic supplement in your diet. Supplements with a diverse range of good bacteria are the best choice, and are widely available at any health food store.

Sleep Well

Depriving your body of an adequate amount of sleep will soon lead to a whole range of health problems, including a comprised immune system. When you are sleeping your body is recharging and gearing up for the day ahead. When you do not give your body the time to do this, then many functions in the body aren’t going to be as effective as usual. These may be small symptoms at first, but over time they can quickly become larger problems.

Limit Sources of Stress

Similarly to sleep deprivation, high levels of stress can also impact your ability to fight germs and stay healthy. Many of us have multiple sources of stress that we are often unable to avoid, such as high pressure jobs or demanding relationships. Therefore, if you can’t avoid these situations entirely, then offsetting the negative effects with relaxation techniques is key. Make a daily effort to self-care, meditate or practice yoga, and you will be equipping your body to stay happy and healthy!

How to Persist with Positivity

As we come towards the end of January, it can be easy to place less importance on the resolutions and goals that you felt were super important at the beginning of the year.

You may already have a solid idea of what it is you want to achieve this year. However, you may also not yet be so aware of where 2017 will take you. Whichever of these situations sounds more true to your own experience, the key to moving forwards is to enable your own positivity.

Positive thinking is a concept that can bring an abundance of happiness into your life, and isn’t something that you should ignore! Often you may feel as though your happiness comes to you naturally, and on other occasions it can be harder to find the source of these positive feelings. This is why knowing how to create a positive mindset for yourself in any situation is beneficial for every aspect of your life.

Meditation

Making time for conscious positivity every day is one of the best ways to ensure that it doesn’t leave your life. For example, spend a short period of time practicing meditation and focusing on all of the great things in your life that you are grateful for. These can be small things, or brief interactions with people that left you feeling good. They can also be larger ideas and tangible things that you are proud of.

Positive Affirmations

Repeating positive affirmations to yourself during the day is also a great way to encourage a continuos positive mindset. Using positive affirmations can seriously help to re-route negative thought patterns and help you to avoid dwelling on past problems, thereby allowing positivity to persist.

Self-Care

Self-care can take many forms. It is an amazing way to keep a smile on your face and peace in your mind. Small acts of self-care may involve making an effort every morning to have a routine that readies you for the day, taking time to be by yourself in nature, or having periods away from technology and the general noise of modern day life.

Incorporating all of the aforementioned concepts into your life will help you to create the happiness you want for yourself. There is no limit to how this positivity can grow and impact you and those around you!

Setting Intentions for the New Year

Making resolutions for the New Year is a concept that many of us partake in, but it is not always something that we all succeed at! Sometimes these goals may be small and quite easily achievable, but often we set wild goals for ourselves that take a lot more time, effort and dedication than we may have first thought.

Setting realistic goals for yourself is a great way to ensure that you do not get discouraged or overwhelmed. If you do have huge ambitions for 2017, then try to break this goal down into smaller stages, and work towards it gradually.

Setting intentions for your life in general is the perfect way to inspire and motivate yourself to embrace positive change at every turn, not just in regards to your specific goals.

Your chosen intentions should constantly encourage you to be healthier, happier or more focused in some way. They will serve as reminders of all you want to be and all you want to achieve. It is often a good idea to start each intention with, “I desire to…”. In doing so, you are stating how you wish to bring change into your life and that you are not going to force it in any way.

Once you have chosen your intentions, try to visualise each one of them and how your life could be different once you have realised your intentions. Visualising your intentions as you repeat them to yourself out loud is something I would recommend doing as part of a meditative practice every few days. This will help you to check in with yourself and your goals, and to remind yourself of the reasons that you want to change yourself in these ways.

Attempting to overcome negative thought patterns and behaviours from the year just passed is key to promoting positivity and success this year. It is important to remember that you are not defined by your mistakes and you do not have to repeat them. When you set new goals and intentions for yourself, you are committing to make positive changes and recognising that you are unhappy with certain aspects of your life. This is a great first step and will show you that there is much to be gained by working towards self-discovery!

Learning From Last Year

Learning from past mistakes is something that does not come easily to everyone. Falling into patterns of negative choices can be second nature to many, and it can take a great effort to break this routine of cyclic behaviour.

If you feel like 2016 was not a good year for you in terms of the choices that you made and the decisions that you regret, then 2017 can be the perfect opportunity to turn this negativity into something productive. Instead of dwelling on the consequences of these choices, see them as lessons learnt and a basis for self-discovery moving forwards.

Mistakes are an inevitable part of the human experience, and something that absolutely everyone makes. Sometimes it may seem that you make more poor choices than those around you, however, you have to remember that not everyone is open and honest about the things in their life that they regret.

There is also much to be learnt from the good things that happened to you in 2016. Maybe you discovered a new hobby, made new friends or embarked upon a new career. When you invite something new into your life it helps you to understand more about yourself. It might show you that you have a skill or a talent that you were previously unaware of, or that you are seeking certain things in life.

The people that we choose to spend our time with will help to mould us and guide us through our own lives. This is why it is important that you surround yourself with positive, encouraging people who will nurture you emotionally. Making new friends, or starting new romantic relationships, can teach us a great deal about the love and kindness that we deserve – as well as about the abundance of our own emotional energy that we are willing to share and invest in others. Try to process any negative interactions you had with people last year and to understand the reasons for them. You can then release these experiences from your mind and have no restrictions as to how open you are to new connections this year.
